About acute pain management

• Acute pain is defined as pain of recent (usually acute) onset and of short duration
  It may be in response to surgery, injury or disease
• The CPMS manages all aspects of acute pain ranging from post-operative pain management to disease related pain, procedural pain and cancer pain
• The CPMS also assists with pain management of patients with palliative pain issues

Staff

• CPMS is staffed by Pain Medicine Specialists, Consultant Anaesthetists, the current rotating Pain Fellow and by 5 part time Clinical Nurse Consultants from the Department of Anaesthesia & Pain Management.
• Out of hours cover is provided by Anaesthesia Registrars and the on-call Anaesthesia Consultant.

• The Clinical Nurse Consultants primary responsibilities are day-to-day management of patients under the care of CPMS, staff education and support, clinical research and audit, development and review of pain management protocols and guidelines, and promotion of optimal pain management throughout the hospital.

Referrals

• Patients who are prescribed analgesia infusions in theatre are automatically referred to CPMS
• For other children requiring pain management a referral needs to be made to CPMS by paging 5773 (24 hours) and completing an inpatient consultation report. The referrer needs to ensure that the child's primary consultant has approved of CPMS involvement

Ward rounds

• CPMS reviews patients twice daily on week days and once daily on weekends and public holidays
• If analgesia is inadequate or the patient is experiencing side-effects, CPMS must be called to review the child
• CPMS can be contacted at all times on pager 5773

Pain link nurses

• The Pain Link nurse role was established in 1999 to provide a link between CPMS and wards/units throughout the hospital
• Pain Link nurses attend additional education about pain management and are encouraged to be actively involved in ward/unit specific pain management issues.
• Pain Link nurses are responsible for local promotion of optimal pain management practices, disseminating changes to pain management protocols and guidelines, clinical audit, education and staff support.
