On Wednesday 30 November, the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) conducted its momentous move into spectacular new premises with close to 150 patients transferred from the old hospital to the new one.
Over the last few weeks, RCH teachers have been assisting with the transition for children and young people, many of whom have spent significant periods of their life in the hospital.
Teachers have focused on exploring new hospital features and turning them into learning opportunities. During national Children’s Week in October, students were visited by staff from Melbourne Zoo and rangers from neighbouring Royal Park and investigated the flora and fauna of this special parkland. The ‘hospital in the park’ has many design features that have been drawn from the colours and shapes found outside the hospital’s walls.
The new two-storey tropical aquarium has great potential to engage children in learning about marine life and inspiring other creative activities.
Not only will the stunning new hospital provide world-class medical facilities for children and young people, the new space offers wonderful inspiration for student learning.
