Pre-summit Workshops 2020

  • In the lead up to the National Early Years Summit 2020, the Centre for Community Child Health will be conducting two workshops designed to provide Summit participants with essential background information to enable them to fully participate in the Summit discussions.

    Workshops

The half-day workshops on March 10 are tailored to support the conference theme of working collaboratively to build our knowledge of what works to advance practice and policy during the first 1000 days.

Places are limited to 50 participants per workshop.

Workshop 1: From ‘consumer’ to ‘contributor’: rethinking the parent/practitioner relationship

An expert-led model of parenting education is still widely dominant in Australia and this can contribute to some families disengaging from services.  However, if a more collaborative approach is taken where parents and professionals work alongside each other, learning from each other, parents may be more likely to engage and feel empowered. To enable this, professionals need the qualities and skills essential to establishing and sustaining reciprocally beneficial learning relationships.

By participating in this workshop, attendees will:

    • be introduced to new ways of assessing the qualities and skills essential to building and sustaining relationships with parents
    • be encouraged to reflect on how to develop a service culture that promotes parent engagement and collaboration to enable children and families to thrive.

Workshop facilitated by Dr Paul Prichard.

    When: Tuesday 10 March
    Time: 9-30am-12:30pm
Where: Pullman Albert Park Melbourne, 65 Queens Road, Albert Park VIC, 3004
Cost: $236 (incl. GST) for Workshop 1*or $418 (incl. GST) for Workshop 1 & 2*

    *Morning tea included.

Workshop 2: The first 1000 days: evidence and implications

This workshop is designed to provide Summit participants with a comprehensive up-to-date understanding of the first 1000 days – how early experiences and exposures shape biology and development, what specific experiences and exposures matter for development, and what the long-term effects of early experiences are. Other issues to be discussed include the nature and significance of what happens before the first 1000 days (intergenerational transmissions, preconception care) as well as what happens afterwards (during the second 1000 days and beyond).

The workshop will provide participants with opportunities to reflect on what this new research tells us about who we are as a species, what kind of society we want to be, and what specific actions need to be taken to ensure optimal conditions for everyone during the first 1000 days.

By participating in this workshop, attendees will:

    • gain a greater understanding of the nature and significance of experiences and exposures before, during and after the first 1000 days
    • reflect on what we know about how to ensure optimal conditions during the first 1000 days and what further action is needed.
