Wed 24 Mar, 2010 Dr Yves d'Udekem The Fontan population: a future epidemic of young adults in heart failure The Fontan procedure is last procedure offered to patient born with congenital heart disease who cannot be offered a repair with two ventricles. Their quality of life seems restricted and their late outcomes are largely unknown. Some fears that most of them will die or require heart transplantation within two decades following this procedure. This patient population is steadily growing and we do not seem to have any solution to improve their future. Yves will present the research arising from Melbourne that lifts up the veil on their late survival and quality of life. He will expose the threat posed by this patient population to the adults awaiting heart transplantation and draw the lines of the potential treatment options that could be developed. Yves d’Udekem is consutant cardiac surgeon in the Royal Children’s Hospital, Associate Professor of the department of Paediatrics of the University of Melbourne and Senior Research Fellow of the MCRI. His research mainly focuses on the outcomes of patients born with functional single ventricles and his research had gained international recognition. He is leading a large national research project involving all practitioners involved in the care of Fontan patients
