Practical Paediatrics Program for regional GPs

Developed with GPs, for GPs, the Practical Paediatrics Program is a series of educational events for GPs presented by Divisions of General Practice in partnership with the Royal Children's Hospital. The planning team includes Divisions of General Practice, RCH specialists and the RCH Primary Care Liaison (Kids Connect) team including the RCH GP Consultant for Education.  Content is based on practical skills for use in General Practice.

Upcoming events

  • Childhood respiratory problems (Part 3 2009)
    • A practical update on diagnosis, treatment and management of common but sometimes tricky childhood respiratory illness.
    • Podcasting provided with the generous support of the National Asthma Council Australia
      National Asthma Council

  • The overweight child & associated disorders (Part 4 2009)
    • A practical update and tips on addressing weight loss and associated co-morbidities in General Practice.  Learning areas include when to think of medical causes; screening for complications including type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, PCOS and sleep apnoea; keeping the child and family on-side; weight and non-related goals & outcomes and when to call it quits and refer on.

Options for regional GPs and Divisions of General Practice

RCH Primary Care Liaison (Kids Connect) will be recording the events and making the powerpoint and audio available online via a 'podcast'.  Regional GPs across Victoria (and beyond) have the option to view this online at any time.

Regional Divisions of General Practice can consider hosting a local event to be held after the GPs have viewed the podcast in their own time.  For example, a lunchtime or evening session with discussion led by a local GP and/or a local paediatrician.  The RCH can facilitate a teleconference at the same time with an RCH specialist should regional GPs wish to ask specific questions or discuss case examples.

What is needed?

  • GPs need to be online to view the podcast.
  • Divisions need commitment to promote the activity and apply for CPD.
  • Space with a teleconference / speaker phone is needed to hold a local event.  This could be at a local hospital or at the Division.
  • The sessions are prepared with our RCH specialists and GP Consultant.  We would welcome regional GP and Division input to content and the way such a program can be developed to meet regional GP needs.
