MBS EPC Items

Medical Benefits Schedule Enhanced Primary Care Chronic Disease Management - Item numbers for General Practice

Northern and Western Divisions of General Practice have compiled a summary of MBS Items that can be used for Enhanced Primary Care delivery. 

Many of these items are useful in paediatrics, for example:

  • Items 2546, 2552, 2558
    For ongoing follow-up and a structured program of regular review to help decrease asthma morbidity

 

  • Items 2517, 2521, 2525
    Ongoing follow-up and annual cycle of care for type 2 diabetic paediatric patients

 

  • Items 2710, 2712, 2713
    Mental Health Comprehensive assessment, long consultations, review and care plans - including children / youth

 

  • Item 10996 
    Practice nurses – wound management – including paediatrics

 

  • Item 10993
    Immunisations by credentialed practice nurses (some eligibility criteria)

 

  • Item 708
    Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders child health check

 

  • Items 714, 716
    Refugee and other humanitarian entrants detailed health assessment - including comprehensive infection screen, Malaria, TB etc, children and adults.

 

  • Items 718, 719
    Health assessment of a child with intellectual disability

 

  • Item 721
    GP Management Plan – for paediatric patients with chronic illness

 

  • Item 723
    GP Team care arrangement if needed for their patients

 

Other new items which further enhance multidisciplinary care can be used by specialists when a child is referred by the GP for a management plan or further management. GPs can also refer specifically for Item 132.   Children with at least two morbidities are eligible. For example, diabetes with other related co-morbidity such as kidney disease or neuropathies.

  • Item 132
    Comprehensive management plan. If the child is already on a GP Management Plan or TCA (Team Care Arrangement), the Specialist Management plan must enhance or complement the existing plan.
    Can be claimed once in 12 months by the same consulting physician.
  • Item   133
    Review of the plan, revise diagnosis or treatment.
    Can be claimed twice in 12 months by the same consulting physician.
