The Royal Children's Hospital Orthotic and Prosthetic Department has been meeting the
needs of referred patients for over 50 years.
The department provides orthoses
(braces/supportive devices) and prostheses (artificial limbs) to
children and adolescents who have acute and/or chronic conditions
requiring treatment. Orthotist Prosthetists are skilled in the treatment of a wide range of neuromusculo-skeletal conditions, as well as providing treatment post surgically, for fracture management and positional plagiocephaly.
We liaise with other Allied Health professionals and Medical staff based either in the hospital or community centres to provide optimal treatment plans using multidisciplinary
management.
Our service provides both in-patient and out-patient care
through an appointment based system operating between the hours of
8:00am and 4.30pm. Appointments can be made through the Contact us link.
Eligibility criteria
Due to high demand on services of this department eligibility
criteria must be met before a child is accepted for treatment by
the Orthotic and Prosthetic Unit. New patients must have a valid
referral in order to book an appointment.
The department accepts
both public referrals (from related clinics within RCH) and private referrals (from external providers or the private suite in the RCH grounds).
Privately referred patients are
subject to fees for provision of any orthoses. You are welcome to contact us should you wish to discuss the costs and if any funding options are available to you.
Adolescent patients requiring regular and ongoing Orthotic and/or Prosthetic Management will be advised of a number of appropriate
facilities that can continue their care. A letter summarising the
patients' Prosthetic Orthotic management at RCH can be provided on request.
For existing patients transition details can be provided upon request.
Location
The department is located in Specialist Clinic B on the 1st
Floor opposite the 'Green Lifts'.
