Dr Ken Mountain was a very popular neonatal paediatrician who worked at the Royal Women's Hospital, Queen Victoria Hospital and in private neonatal practice in Melbourne. He worked as a paediatrician in the newborn nursery at RWH for many years. He was a very genial fellow who always had time to talk to and teach members of the junior medical staff.  He also greeted those who worked with him as friends long after they had worked with him. Ken engaged in good humoured repartee and made people feel comfortable in his presence. This was a special talent.

Together with Dr Les Markman he set up a private neonatal practice in the 1970s which was legendary in its size and scope - David Carolane later joined their practice. They gave many young paediatricians their introduction to private practice as locums, and they provided excellent neonatal care to newborns at many private hospitals.  It was during this time that he also worked in the Queen Victoria Hospital paediatric wards, heading the “Glass-Mountain team” with eminent paediatrician Dr. Reuben Glass.   In a wider professional role, Dr Ken Mountain was a founding member of “ADIPS” Australian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society.

He was a very good friend of fellow neonatologist and RCH Alumnus Dr. Neil Roy and together they formed a very long standing and collegiate RWH golfing group.  Ken Mountain will be remembered as a hard working paediatrician, teacher, and a good and honorable man.
