John Stanway
Background
John completed a double degree in Economics, a Not for Degree in English Literature (both at Monash) and a Graduate Diploma in Industrial Relations.
He has worked in various industries, including trade, manufacturing, and Insurance. He was directly involved in the early Transport Accident Commission (TAC) road safety initiatives (remember Drink Drive Bloody Idiot) and became CEO of the TAC.
John joined Southern Health and progressively worked his way to mange Dandenong Hospital and then Monash Medical Centre before joining the RCH. He was a member of the Victorian Industrial Association (VHIA) and then became Chairman of the VHIA
Work at RCH
Tony Cull employed John as the Executive Director Clinical Support Services and he then became the Chief Operating Officer before being appointed CEO in 2017.
John spent 15 years at RCH directly involved in the new hospital build, the introduction of the EPIC Electronic Medical Record, the Compact (culture change initiative) and working with the various staff of the hospital to deliver great care.
He was on the Boards of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the RCH Foundation and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre
John was appointed to the Board of Children’s Healthcare Australasia (CHA) and then became President of CHA which represents the paediatric hospitals in Australia and New Zealand.
Other Work and Contributions
John retired from the RCH and full-time work in July 2021. Currently he is the Strategic Adviser Health for the National Disability Insurance Agency (part time) with a focus on safe and timely discharge of NDIS patients from public hospitals.
He also continues as President of Children’s Healthcare Australasia
John has worked closely with Victoria University and was Alumni of the Year in 2022. During 2023, John was the Executive in Residence at Victoria University, giving lectures to nursing and ambulance students on leadership, management and how a hospital actually functions – very enjoyable work.
Leisure Interests
John, with his wife Marie, enjoy supporting their three children and their grandchildren.
They stay reasonably fit and enjoy their offroad caravan and associated adventures into the Australian outback.
