Supporting children and their families often requires services and support staff to undertake multiple tasks across diverse settings. This can include:

• engaging with families experiencing complex needs;
• facilitating small groups for parents; and
• delivering training for other practitioners.

This workshop brings together two important topics for professional learning – engaging parents, and facilitating small groups.

The workshop gives particular emphasis to engaging groups who are traditionally viewed by services as ‘hard to reach’ or ‘out of reach’. It is built on the premise that regardless of the quality of an intervention, HOW programs are delivered is of equal importance, and makes a lot of difference.

The workshop uses the parallel focus of genuine engagement and small group facilitation to draw out clear understanding and answer key questions on both topics.

Participants are encouraged to use the content and modelled facilitation of the workshop to identify and reflect on facilitation approaches that can help or hinder partnership, both in one-on-one work with parents or in the facilitation of small groups.

Learning Objectives

Participants will have an increased understanding of:

1. the characteristics of facilitation that reflect partnership;
2. the skills and qualities of an effective facilitator
3. facilitation tools and techniques that reflect adult learning principles;
4. ‘engagement’ as a culture of practice;
5. worker and service characteristics that support engagement; and
6. strategies to promote engagement within and across services.
   

Course Outcomes

• Participants have the knowledge and understanding to identify and implement facilitation skills and techniques that reflect both adult learning principles and partnership between facilitator and participant.  
• Participants are ready to plan and implement practice/workplace change that contributes towards engaging others in service planning and delivery.   

 This course may appear different to traditional professional development experiences.

Participants will be invited to:

• engage in an exploration of the many facets of facilitation and genuine engagement;
• reflect on how different styles of facilitation might impact on the process of engagement; and
• engage in small group practice activities related to specific components of the course.
