Complex Asthma Service

  • The Complex Asthma Service provides medium-term intensive outpatient care and support to children with complex and/or severe asthma. It is a HARP funded program that aims to prevent avoidable representation to hospital and is available to all patients who have had an asthma presentation to any Victorian hospital in the previous 12 months.

The program aims to help families manage their child’s asthma and improve asthma control.

Through a multidisciplinary approach, the service provides:

    • Medical assessment and management of children with complex or severe asthma, including the commencement of biological therapies if necessary
    • Intensive monitoring of asthma status and provision of responsive care to improve asthma control
    • Asthma education and support specific for each family
    • Self-management guidance and support
    • Ongoing nurse care coordination (in consultation with the treating medical team) as required
    • Once stable, the children are transferred to a more appropriate service closer to home, e.g. local GP or paediatrician.
