Resuscitation program

  • Basic Life Support

    Basic Life Support is a level of care which is provided to a person who is acutely deteriorating without the aid of medication, invasive skills or medical equipment, until they can be given full medical care.

    The organisation follows the structured approach of the DRSABCD algorithm being:

    • Danger
    • Response
    • Send for help
    • Airway
    • Breathing
    • Circulation/compression
    • Attach Defibrillator (this will be included for medical and nursing staff in face to face sessions)

    This guideline aligns with the Australian and New Zealand Resuscitation Council (ANZCOR), Guidelines (2016) and has been developed in consultation with the Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration Committee and the Education Hub.

    Basic Life Support at the RCH comprises of an online module, an assessment, skills and knowledge face-to-face training and team training.


    Online learning modules

    All RCH staff will be automatically enrolled into Basic Life Support via Learning HERO.

    All clinical staff will complete the same module but will undertake an assessment at the end of the course which is relevant to their scope of practice.

    • Basic Life Support and Bag Valve Mask, Fluids and Medications - Medical and Nursing staff
    • Basic Life Support and Bag Valve Mask - Allied health staff

    Administration and management staff have available an online module targeted at their needs.

    Basic Life Support Skills and Knowledge Training

    This is a one hour face-to-face session with fifteen minutes allocated on how to manage Anaphylaxis.

    For underpinning knowledge and prior learning, it is highly recommended that you complete the Anaphylaxis and Adrenaline and Fluid Bolus in a Resuscitation eLearn modules.

    In the session we aim to perfect airway, bag/mask and chest compression techniques, and assess each individual for competency.

    Basic Life Support Team Training (The 'First 3 Minutes')

    We resuscitate as a team, we should train as a team

    The ‘First 3 Minutes’ program provides inter-professional resuscitation training for health professionals. This program enables participants to refresh their knowledge of Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines, practice their basic life support skills and train together as a team to respond effectively to an acutely deteriorating person.

    Book into a ‘First 3 Minutes’ team scenario that enables your team to practice effective team functioning at the bedside.

    Where possible the training is delivered in your clinical (real) environment, with your team, using your equipment.

    Anaphylaxis

    Online learning module 

    The aim of this education is to teach staff how to recognise and manage an acute onset of anaphylaxis until further help arrives.

    The eLearn module is intended to be a “just in time” resource that staff can access or alternatively support a department education training session. It provides the underpinning knowledge on anaphylaxis prior to attending a face-to-face and short team training sessions. This module is designed to support our Anaphylaxis CPG.

    Assessment

    Assessments are designed according to your profession in the hospital. Via the course in Learning HERO you will have an opportunity to select the appropriate assessment.

    Adrenaline and Fluid Bolus Administration in a Resuscitation

    Online learning module

    For medical and nursing staff, this education aims to assist you in the skills of drawing up and administering fluids and medications in an acutely deteriorating person.

    The eLearn module is intended to be a “just in time” resource that staff can access or alternatively support a department training session. This module is designed to support our Adrenaline and fluid bolus administration in a resuscitation CPG.

    Choking

    This education aims to teach you how to manage a foreign body obstruction until further help arrives.

    The eLearn module is intended to be a “just in time” resource that staff can access or alternatively support a department’ training session.

    Face-to-face sessions are offered as part of a Basic Life Support Skills and Knowledge session, or team training scenario.

    The ‘First 3 Minutes’ Train the Trainer

    This half day workshop is an inter-professional course which provides participants with the skills and underpinning knowledge to support and facilitate the resuscitation program. This includes:

    • Understanding and competence in the knowledge and skills of the DRSABCD algorithm to facilitate and support the organisations Basic Life Support annual competency
    • Gain an understanding of the theory and skills of debriefing to be able facilitate a ‘First 3 Minutes’ scenario within their own department, focusing on team training and human factors.
    • Understand the Anaphylaxis algorithm to facilitate ongoing education
    • Understand the foreign airway obstruction/choking algorithm to facilitate ongoing education

    Participants will be supported with ongoing mentorship and development in these skills by the resuscitation program lead and facilitators.

    Recognising and Responding to the Deteriorating Patient

    The workshop aims to identify and develop the skills to Recognise a deteriorating infant, child or adolescent and to be able to appropriately manage these situations. To consider appropriate inter-professional responses and interventions for the paediatric patient population.
