The department provides a 24 hour service by the following provisions:

Bacteriology

Normal Laboratory Hours

• Monday to Friday: 0845 to 2400 hours (Limited service after 1715 hours)
• Saturday & Public Holidays: 0800 to 2400 hours (Limited service after 1715 hours)
• Sundays Good Friday & Christmas Day: 0800 to 2400 hours (Limited service)

Urgent "on - call" Service

• All other times outside normal laboratory hours, specimens that require urgent processing are referred to the On-call Scientist after consultation with clinical microbiologists/infectious diseases physicians on-call.
• Cerebrospinal fluid does NOT require consultation with the clinical microbiologists/infectious diseases physicians for after hours testing and should be sent to the Haematology Laboratory at RCH or the Core Laboratory at RWH as soon as possible.

Microbial Serology

Normal Laboratory Hours

• Monday to Friday: 0845 to 1715 hours
• Senior Scientist: Karin Rautenbacher

Urgent "on - call" Service

• Staff needle stick serology after hours will be sent to the Biochemistry Laboratory at RCH.  
• Urgent varicella-zoster virus serology will be performed the next working day.
• There is no other formal after-hours service provided by this laboratory.

Molecular Microbiology/Virology

Normal Laboratory Hours

• Monday to Friday: 0845 to 1715 hours
• Saturday: 0900 to 1500 hours

Urgent "on - call" Service

• There is no formal after-hours service provided by these laboratories.

There is also available on a 24 hours on-call basis, a Clinical Microbiologist and the Principal Scientist for laboratory based enquiries. Please contact through RCH switchboard.
