David Slattery FRACS MBBS(Hons), LLB, FAOrthoA
Dr Slattery was born and has grown up in Melbourne. He initially
went to Melbourne University to study Law with a focus upon health and medical
law prior to embarking on his medical career. He completed his undergraduate
medical degree in 2008 at the University of Queensland where he graduated with
first class honours.
He then returned to Melbourne and completed his internship
and residency at The Alfred hospital, with time spent at Sandringham Hospital
and Shepparton Base Hospital. David was accepted into the Orthopaedic
Specialist training program in 2010 with the Royal Australian College of
Surgeons, and spent
time in Western Australia before returning to Victoria to
complete his specialist training. During this time he did numerous Outreach
Trips to remote indigenous communities of Western Australia. He spent time at
The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Royal Childrens Hospital, The Austin Hospital,
Sandringham Hospital, Shepparton Hospital, Western Health and Monash Health.
David then went on to sub-specialise by undertaking
fellowships in Pelvic and Acetabular Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery in the
United Kingdom, under the direct supervision of some of the leading Pelvic
surgeons in the UK. He then travelled to Switzerland where he undertook further
fellowship training under the guidance of Prof. Martin Beck in Paediatric and
Adult Hip Preservation and Reconstruction Surgery. There he refined his
knowledge of Arthroscopic Hip Surgery, Pelvic Osteotomies(PAO), and Direct
Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery. David then returned to Melbourne and
undertook further training with Mr David Young and Mr Jitendra Balakumar in,
Hip Preservation Surgery, Anterior Hip and Knee Replacement, and lower limb
sports surgery.
David has published numerous papers in various Orthopaedic
journals on a variety of Orthopaedic topics, and is actively engaged in ongoing
research projects to further our knowledge of Hip and Knee disorders. He
regularly teaches junior doctors, medical students and registrars. He greatly
appreciates patient engagement with research as it is a key instrument in
assisting the community to better understand and treat orthopaedic conditions.
Key to David’s practice is having a patient centred focus,
and tailoring treatments to suit the individual. He has a wide variety of open
and arthroscopic surgical skills and is able to individualise treatment to
match every patient’s unique problems. Communication is central to David’s
practice and he endeavours to ensure that patients are actively engaged in the
decision making process at all stages of their treatment journey. He prides
himself on being open and honest with patients and will do his utmost to ensure
that they are engaged and that their expectations are met.
David lives locally in Melbourne and has two small
children, and if he is not chasing after them, he is likely out fishing!
