Illizarov Footplate Care
Illizarov Footplate Care
Wear the footplate during the times requested by your consultant or clinical nurse specialist.
If you do not have pinsites around your feet wash your feet daily with soap and water and dry thoroughly. If appropriate wear cotton socks on your feet to help absorb sweat and keep your feet clean.
Check your feet daily for any pressure areas. Main areas to look out for are at the back of the heels and under the balls of the feet if you are spending a lot of time non weight bearing.
If you notice any pressure areas or blisters DO NOT ADD EXTRA PADDING. Call the orthotics department on 9345 9300 as soon as possible and speak to your treating clinician regarding advice on how to deal with the pressure area. You may require an appointment in the prosthetic orthotic department for adjustments to reduce the pressure the footplate is causing, and we can provide further information if required.
Periodically clean the footplate by wiping the inside sole with damp soapy facewasher or baby wipe. Ensure the footplate is dry before putting back on the foot.
