    PIPER Paediatric Outreach Education Program

An Outreach Education program is available to hospitals throughout Victoria, Southern NSW and Tasmania. We run various types of programs currently: an in-person webinars, online interactive webinar for multiple learners, as well as a face to face program for individual hospitals.

PIPER Paediatric: Situation Critical Webinars 2024

These Interactive webinars involve challenging cases and small group discussion and include faculty from PIPER and PICU. We invite senior nursing and medical staff wanting to extend their knowledge of care for the sick paediatric patient. There will be in person sessions and sessions  hosted via Zoom

Feedback from participants for online workshops:

‘The online workshop’ enabled me to learn some acute paediatric skills that is usually very hard to get in a face to face session due to booking limits and ‘barriers of’ travel to venue etc.’ Consultant, Emergency Department, PIPER Respiratory workshop

‘Really enjoyed to learn from the crew at RCH again - it is highly motivating to discuss cases together’ Consultant, Emergency Department, PIPER Respiratory workshop

‘I liked the break out rooms and the session on non- invasive ventilation was very useful as it's not something we do very often with children’ Clinical Nurse Educator, Emergency Department, PIPER Respiratory Workshop

PIPER Paediatric Face to Face Workshops

A workshop can be tailored to the needs of staff in your hospital. The seminar can include the following topics (but is not limited to these): airway management, fluid resuscitation of children, management of child trauma, asthma protocols, management of the shocked child, preparation for transport, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and care of neurological emergencies. It is a lecture-based program with ample opportunity for questions, small group discussions and demonstration of equipment. A practical component can be offered, allowing small group participation in intraosseous needle insertion, CPR, measuring cervical collars, log rolling, and scenario teaching.

The sessions are relevant to a broad population of health care professionals. We therefore encourage participation of hospital staff that either have limited exposure to treatment of paediatric patients or to those experienced paediatric staff that wish to consolidate or expand their knowledge of the care and resuscitation of severely ill children.

We are constantly monitoring the COVID situation and are conscious that additional stresses mean local teams need to be flexible too. While these sessions are face to face currently we can look at online options if the need arises.
