BD Saf-T-Intima™ removal guide

    This guide was created as part of the Clinical Guideline (Nursing): Subcutaneous Catheter devices; Management of Insuflon ™ and BD Saf-T-Intima™ devices

     

     Equipment

    • Bandaid or transparent occlusive dressing
    • Gauze

    Procedure

    1. Perform hand hygiene and assemble equipment
    2. Prepare and explain the procedure to the child (if appropriate) and parents/caregivers
    3. Perform hand hygiene and put on non sterile gloves
    4. Remove the transparent occlusive dressing from the skin, place a small amount of pressure on the wings of the BD Saf-T-Intima™ as you remove the dressing
    5. Withdraw the BD Saf-T-Intima™ from the insertion site in one quick, smooth movement
    6. Apply gauze over insertion site if required to absorb any exudate
    7. A bandaid or transparent occlusive dressing can be placed on the site depending on the preference of the patient and parents/caregivers. If there is an increased amount of exudate from the site place an absorbent dressing onto the site and observe for further exudate or signs of infection such as redness or inflammation
    8. Dispose of any waste in the appropriate containers
    9. Complete appropriate documentation; record the date and reason for removal of the BD Saf-T-Intima™ in the Inpatient Progress Notes MR660/A, if any abnormities at the site are seen it may be necessary to inform appropriate medical team
